Springing into a brightly-coloured summer
I kinda struggle with the winter, I get a feeling of dread and depression around September time and I am considerably more grumpy, mopey and less productive once the clocks go back – why can’t I just hibernate? So I am excited to see the change in the weather over the last few weeks, it’s warmer (generally), sunnier (mostly) and things have started to burst forth with greenery and blossom. It’s fair to say that this is my favourite time of year, all those hot balmy days stretching ahead of us, flip flops to be warn, summer dresses to buy and holidays to be had. There is a feel of promise and optimism in the air.
Sunshine makes us feel good, it releases endorphins and increases our levels of vitamin D – both of which work as antidepressants - and people are generally much nicer when the sun has got his hat on. In fact, sunshine effects all sorts of random things. Apparently rates of college admissions are higher in sunny weather, stock markets are more likely to go up on sunny days and we buy less lottery tickets, booze and cigarettes (strange but true, apparently it’s the gloom of non-sunny days that drives us to these vices).
Having just celebrated Easter and had the spring equinox (hello sunshine!) spring is well and truly here and my head is being turned by all sorts of brightly-coloured summery-ness, including this gorgeous brooch found in a box of my grandparents things. Apparently Grandad used the make them (clever chap), I love it’s kitchness and fabulous colours. This led me off on a voyage of discovery (one of those afternoons lost to online shopping) and I’ve found some fabulous colourful handmade and vintage items that my summer isn’t going to be the same without.
