There’s an app for that: Moves

Just before Christmas Father Christmas dropped off an early present for me in the shape of an iPhone 5 – lucky me, I must have been a very good girl! So I spent most of the Christmas break playing with it, fiddling with settings and downloading a bunch of new apps. Lots of the apps were downloaded with the hope that they would help me with my 2013 resolutions and keeping my work and non-work life in order. So I’m going to share a few of my favourites with you guys over the next few weeks, maybe they will help you through 2013 as well? App 2 on my list is Moves:

Keeping you moving!

This is clever little app records all your daily activity. Just by carrying your phone in a pocket or bag Moves automatically tracks your everyday life and exercise and shows it all to you in a smart timeline, keeping a daily record of everything you’ve done and everywhere you’ve been.

As it’s all done automatically there’s no cheating but it does rely on you keeping your phone on you, so if you want to make sure those 20 steps to make a cup of coffee count then you’ll need to pop it in your pocket.

One of my resolutions was to add more activity into my daily life and I’d love to be able to tell you that the picture is of one of my days but sadly no, I haven’t been on a bicycle for years and some days over Christmas I struggled to make four figures with my steps walked (for shame!). But this app is definitely making a difference to my daily activity levels, and trying to beat your daily record becomes a big game – great if you have a competitive streak like me! All too often my days have involved sitting at my desk and not much else, so Moves has been great for encouraging me to find ways of increasing the amount I move around – walking to the Post Office or shops, stopping for lunch and going for a walk, parking much further from my meeting or getting off the tube early. Your daily steps target is about 10,000 apparently!
